Write What You Know
Effective Settings & Description
I began writing short stories in 1996. With a degree in creative writing from Ohio’s Bowling Green State University, my sister, Holly offered a challenge to compose stories which we could share with each other, and proposed monthly deadlines which would force her to put pen to paper while life’s demands left her with few hours to pursue her aspirations. At the time, I was submerged in a technology career and happy to oblige in the joint, creative endeavor.
Once a year we collected phrases, sometimes with the help of siblings, and selected twelve prompts to provide ourselves with a year’s worth of writing ideas. I found élan vital; writing was in my blood.
Over the years I have attended writing conferences, participated in writing groups, and joined literary organizations. I’ve signed-up for on-line classes and led writing workshops. What started as a lark, took on a life of its own. From the challenge conception, twenty years ago, I continue to enjoy the activity of creative writing.
